I am updating this because I added a few more illustrations and captions for them all. So here we go...

The McElderry Book of Grimms' Fairy Tales by Saviour Pirotta (Adapter), Emma Chichester Clark (Illustrator) is not a new book, but I recently discovered many of the illustrations from it in an online exhibition so I thought I would share on this hot, summery day.

The Little Mermaid by Queensland Ballet

The Queensland Ballet is producing The Little Mermaid this weekend. So if you are in Australia, go and see it. For the rest of us, here is a short promo video that gives us a glimpse of how the story has been concepted for ballet.



And the synopsis:

The kind-hearted Little Mermaid rescues a Prince during a storm at sea, and so begins a journey that takes her far from her home beneath the waves. Determined to pursue her love on to the shore, she makes a bargain with the Sea Witch – but it comes at a heavy price.

This much-loved story from Hans Christian Andersen is more than a simple fairy tale. François Klaus’s charming and poignant ballet explores the nature of longing, how making choices may have lasting consequences, and how goodness can be rewarded in unexpected ways.

Mirror Mirror by Sons & Daughters

Mirror Mirror by Sons & Daughters will be released in a week in the UK and next month stateside. I am completely unfamiliar with them but they have drawn some inspiration from some fairy tales, so they get a mention here!

Director Bryan Singer Talks Jack the Giant Killer

John experienced a minor miracle this weekend and I actually went to a movie with him. It was X-Men: First Class and it made me not think about mermaids and other assorted fairy tales for at least three hours so it was a success. It also got me thinking about Singer's upcoming Jack the Giant Killer. I wasn't as enthused before but when Singer is at his best, it's really entertaining.

I'm really eager for the first imagery, too.

While the title implies that the movie will have action and giant-killing, Singer says the movie also includes a love story about Jack (Nicholas Hoult from X-Men: First Class, which Singer produced) and a princess (Eleanor Tomlinson) that he must save from the giants he accidentally allows into the universe.

It's the first time in one of my films that there's a romance that's not fraught with a love triangle. The simpleness of this romance is my cure for all the love triangles that permeated the X-Men.

While the movie is based on fairy tales, Singer thinks that Giant Killer will be about the "nature of storytelling" as well.

I think this takes it a step further — it's all about the nature of storytelling. The tale is told by certain characters, and then it gets retold. It shows you can't separate the story from the way it's told.

Written by Christopher McQuarrie, Darren Lemke, and Mark Bomback, Jack the Giant Killer stars Ewan McGregor as palace guard Elmont, Bill Nighy and John Kassir as the two-headed leader of the giants, Ian McShane as King Brahmwell, and Stanley Tucci as the Brahmwell's villainous adviser Lord Roderick.

Looking for Cinderella (or the best fairy tale) in Annapolis

Okay, this one has made my morning! Someone has a sense of humor and an editor who supports it.

There it was. Forsaken.

The black, left-footed Ann Taylor Loft size 7M high-heeled strappy sandal perched atop the brick wall on Duke of Gloucester Street in downtown Annapolis was discovered Friday by a far-from-princely editor from The Capital out for his morning jog.

Could it belong to a modern-day Cinderella?

We would love to know the story behind the lost footwear (shown above).

Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (Lost) are talented men. But with the fairy tale drama Once Upon a Time, they’re tackling an ambitious premise that revolves around a young female heroine (Jennifer Morrison), so any help from fellow talent is welcome. According to THR, ABC has wisely hired Jane Espenson and Liz Tigelaar as producers the drama. With credits on Torchwood, Game of Thrones, Battlestar Galactica, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Espenson is the go-to girl for genre fare. Terrific hire — Espenson will be a co-executive producer.

I am really, really rooting for this one!

And they all lived happily ever after – or so everyone was led to believe. Emma Swan knows how to take care of herself. Snow White Movie Wars

From 'Snow White' war: Relativity Media leapfrogs its fairy tale adaptation's release date ahead of Universal's:

Shot No. 2 has just been fired. As we predicted Monday, Relativity Media is moving the release date for its still-untitled, family-friendly Snow White action project ahead of Universal Pictures' fairy tale adaptation, "Snow White and the Huntsman."

Relativity's movie, which will star Julia Roberts as the evil queen, will now come out on March 16, 2012, the same weekend as Sony's "21 Jump Street" and one week ahead of the highly anticipated adaptation "The Hunger Games" from Lionsgate. (Relativity's Snow White film is scheduled to begin shooting next month.)

Tuesday's move comes one week after Universal shifted its Snow White adaptation out of the 2012 holiday season to June 1, nearly a month ahead of Relativity's original June 29, 2012, release date.

Relativity is not stopping with "Snow White." They seem to be engaging in all-out warfare with Universal, dating their Nicholas Sparks romance "Safe Haven" -- which has yet to be cast -- on June 1. That means it will go head to head with "Snow White and the Huntsman" starring Kristen Stewart.

At least for now this means we will be seeing them earlier than planned....
