Mirror, Mirror (2012): New International Trailer and a Featurette

That's the new 2-minute international trailer for Mirror, Mirror (2012). And I just realized we are only 7 weeks away from release since it is out on March 16th. Wow. I am expecting the media coverage to start boosting soon and I will try to share a good amount of it here.

I am trying to decide how much Snow White discussion to have on the blog. I discussed a lot when I released Sleeping Beauties: Sleeping Beauty and Snow White Tales From Around the World. But there is always more.

Top Chef Texas: Fit for an Evil Queen

Okay, now here's a reality show using fairy tales that I actually watch. Yes, John and I enjoy watching Top Chef together so this upcoming Wednesday's episode on 1/18/2012 will be a little more fun for us with the theme.

Here's the episode description from the Bravo website:

This week’s Quickfire is all about awareness in the kitchen. The chefs will have 30 minutes to create a dish of their choosing, but this is no ordinary Quickfire. Once time begins, various ingredients will start to come into the kitchen via a train. The chefs must select ingredients coming into the kitchen via train and create a dish incorporating the best of these ingredients. For the elimination challenge, the chefs embody evil on the plate and serve a gothic feast fit for a queen. This dish should demonstrate various cooking techniques, textures and flavors, but more importantly, the diners should visually see the “evil” components on the dish. Actress Charlize Theron, who plays the Evil Queen in the film Snow White & The Huntsman guest judges, along with Emeril Lagasse, head judge Tom Colicchio, and host Padma Lakshmi.

Interesting challenge. And more evidence that the promotional work and competition between the two Snow White movies is going to be fierce in upcoming months. This movie isn't even out for four more months.

Tonight's OUAT: The Heart is a Lonely Hunter

That's the official promo for tonight's episode of "Once Upon a Time," titled, "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter." Obviously several meanings to that one when one watches the previews and reads the official description:

One of the town's residents begins to remember their fairytale past, and Storybrooke mourns the loss of one of their own. Meanwhile, in the fairytale world that was, the Evil Queen attempts to find a heartless assassin to murder Snow White, on "Once Upon a Time," on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11.

Disney Princesses as Cover Models by Petite Tiaras

Oh, me oh my. I have to devote a few posts to Disney princesses this week because I really enjoyed these on different levels. First up, found at 13 Disney Princesses Magically Transformed Into Magazine Cover Models by Jill Pantozzi and originally from Petite Tiaras who I believe created them. Love the tag lines, too.

 

 

Snow White and Huntsman: New Photos

Here are some new photos supposedly of a funeral procession from the Snow White and the Huntsman film which is apparently near the end of filming. No glass coffins here. And the smiling at a funeral procession is interesting...

Another Film: Snow White: A Deadly Summer in 2012

This hit the media today--at the least the media that covers horror films--so I'm not linking to a specific source since they all used the same press release.

Look! Another Snow White film! Snow White: A Deadly Summer in 2012.

This is set to be a straight to DVD release next year starring Shanley Caswell, Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight, The Expendables), and Maureen McCormick ("The Brady Bunch"). And if that's the Eric Roberts, brother to Julia Roberts, that's even funny. Now Emma Roberts has to get herself a Snow White film, too. (If it's not the same Eric Roberts--I'm too lazy to check, oh well.)

Synopsis:

A modern retelling of a timeless tale. Snow is abducted at the order of her wicked stepmother and taken to an isolated wooded discipline camp, run by a ruthless hunter. When each of her fellow seven campers begin dying off one by one, Snow must uncover the dark and twisted secret of the forest before she becomes the next victim.

Flashback: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs by Laura Ljungkvist

I was recently reminding of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs by Laura Ljungkvist when she was featured on the Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast blog. This was published in 2003 and was an unusual interpretation of the fairy tale with its illustrations. Ljungkvist's schtick, you might say, it is to connect her illustrations with a line running through them which is fun for many child readers. She's only done the one fairy tale and this one is always instantly recognizable to me.

The reviews were mixed on this one and its audience may be narrow, but it is interesting all the same.

Swedish-born artist Ljungkvist (Toni's Topsy-Turvy Telephone Day, 2001) holds up her own magic mirror to this age-old story, offering a thoroughly modern, crisply geometric reflection of the fairy tale. Of course, justice prevails in this stripped-down, but well-told, version of the favorite tale. The ultraclean artwork cleverly emphasizes the archetypal nature of this story of good versus evil, allowing Ljungkvist to use color and form to communicate mood and meaning. In one spread, the faces of the seven dwarfs are drawn with one continuous black line that children may enjoy tracing with a finger. The appealing, highly stylized illustrations--evocative of the work of Joan Miro and Vladimir Radunsky--appear to be computer generated, but in a note the artist says she uses gouache on watercolor paper to keep the imperfections that "give it life." Once Upon a Time: Four Episodes In

Above is the preview for the next episode.

This next Sunday will be a byweek for Once Upon a Time, but we now have four episodes aired in the US. I myself finally got caught up with the series over the weekend after only seeing the pilot before my vacation trip. I think last night was my favorite so far probably because I liked the more episodic content as well as the Cinderella/Rumpelstiltskin mash-up element to it.

Or perhaps, after four episodes, I am simply more comfortable with it and more forgiving of the flaws and more interested in the storytelling. Like Cinderella being called "Ashley" in one storyline last night. Less obvious than I expected of the show, so I was happy with it. Does that make any sense?

Besides, I prefer Robert Carlyle as a villain than the wicked queen whose motivations and understanding are still not working as well for me. Are we really to believe that a small town life is a "curse" she loves just because it gives her control? Cursing herself to curse the others? And how is that really a curse? Their lives don't seem so horrible to me...sure, no true love, but it doesn't seem to be working so well for them in their fairy tale existences either.

Besides, Carlyle had some of the best lines last night and delivered them well for having to play a supernatural villain.

So what are your feelings about "Once Upon a Time"?

The good news if you are a fan so far is that ABC has picked up a full season of the series.

The fall has been kind to ABC; after recent full season orders for 'Revenge' and 'Suburgatory,' the Alphabet network is doubling down with pickups for two more of their freshman series, fantasy drama 'Once Upon a Time' and Tim Allen's 'Last Man Standing.'

Though 'Once' has only aired two episodes so far, it's already the highest-rated new drama of the season, managing an average 12.3 million viewers and a robust 4.0 rating in the coveted adults 18-49 demo.

My goal this week is to finally see Grimm, because, no, I haven't yet. TV has not been a priority for weeks and weeks and weeks in my little world. I admit I am also squeamish about it since I don't care for the violence that I've seen so far and my husband said the pilot is violent. I am a Downton Abbey/Pride and Prejudice sort of girl overall despite my fascination with Bluebeard, who sounds like a perfect fit for Grimm actually, in all his incarnations.

So that's the first trailer for Snow White & The Huntsman movie. Better than I anticipated actually but then it dwells on Theron and not Stewart who I have a hard time not seeing as Bella Swann, alas.

In theatres June 1, 2012.

I have a feeling that by the end of 2012 I will be really weary of Snow White. She is certainly the belle of the fairy tale ball right now. Although I like her much better after reading so many of her stories while editing Sleeping Beauties: Sleeping Beauty and Snow White Tales From Around the World. I didn't like her much before that, but I do now, so that is a boon. My view of her is no longer dominated by Disney and I doubt it ever will be again.

New Book: Snow in Summer: Fairest of Them All by Jane Yolen

It's finally here! Today is the release date for Snow in Summer: Fairest of Them All by Jane Yolen. I received an ARC of this one and it is lovely. Yolen's rich language and adept storytelling make for a compelling story and I enjoyed this one very much.

However, I would say it is for the age range provided and older. I started it with my precocious reading 8 1/2 year old niece who was somewhat bored--she rushed back to her library books of Hinduism for Dummies and Beekeeping for Dummies. (Really. She is very precocious and I adore her.) It may have been a bad day for her, but she glommed up A Tale Dark and Grimm, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Eragon in years past. It could also be taste although she likes fairy tale novels I share with her in general.

As for myself, I've been a Yolen fan since Briar Rose and Snow in Summer is a boon while very different. Yes, we are inundated with Snow White in other media formats these days, but novels of her story are currently few and far between which also made this one refreshing.

I hope to write a more in-depth review soon but I read this shortly before my trip to Europe and am still recovering brain cells from jet lag and overstimulation the past several weeks from before, during, and after trip demands.
