Disney's Snow White at Williams-Sonoma

So, here's another fun shopping find I discovered while exploring Williams-Sonoma during their three day free shipping promotion. (Valid November 26, 2011 at 12:00 AM (PT) to November 28, 2011 at 11:59 PM (PT).) I have been flirting with the Marvel Cakelet pan and the Gingerbread Kids and the Train cakelets for a while, but haven't bitten yet. I have a small cake pan fetish and discovered these new offerings, darn it. I am really torn since I am not a Disney Snow White fan. But I enjoy novelty cake pans. Oh, the dilemmas! It's a Snow White and Seven Dwarfs Cakelet pan. Should I or shouldn't I?

But wait! There's more! Snow White cookie cutters...

And, oh no, Snow White cupcake kits! Well, these aren't as exciting, but they're in the collection, so I'll share them, too.

There are no affiliate links on this one and Williams-Sonoma doesn't know who I am. These are featured because they belong here. Over and out.

Rapunzel Cake by Barbara Jo

We all know I have a love for edible art and so I went looking for Rapunzel themed cakes and such.  This is from 2002 and appeared on the Do It Myself blog, a now defunct blog featuring the work of two sisters, Barbara Jo and Barbara May.  Barbara Jo created this cake.  Here's her description:

I assembled the tower then covered it with jelly beans and non-pariels. I then added details like Tart N Tinies and dragees and drew vines and flowers on the tower with royal icing. I drew the flowers and the hanging tower details with royal icing on wax paper. After they dried, I attached them. The grass is royal icing, applied with a grass decorating tip, with individual blades added between the "paving stones." Rapunzel, the prince, and the witch are colored rolled fondant, which I made from scratch, with royal icing details and rainbow sprinkle irises.

Candies used:

Large and small jelly beans, pink and white mint lozenges, Snowcaps, large and small non-pariels, Necco wafers, chocolate rocks, Tart N Tinies, gold and silver dragees, rainbow sprinkles, royal icing, rolled fondant

That's dedication because this is one of the most detailed I've seen with all of the piece work it required.  And all that candy looks like flowers.  (Am I strange if I mention that the tower reminded me of Rapunzel's braided hair in Tangled?  If you've seen it, hopefully you know what I mean and don't think I'm bonkers!)

Let Them Eat Princess and the Pea Cake

After perusing the traffic statistics for this blog, I was surprised to learn that one of the top three most visited entries so far has been The Princess and the Pea Craft.

Since August starts tomorrow and brings with it the decline of the summer school break for most kids and their parents, at least here in the states, I thought I'd offer up another fun Princess and the Pea activity: The Princess and the Pea Cake for the weekend. The link takes you to a recipe and crafting instructions.

The headboard could easily be adapted for children's creation, for example, using cardboard or even the kids' ubiquitous popsicle sticks instead. An appropriate-sized doll could be the princess. There's many ways to make this cake a simpler but still fun project if your decorating skills are inexperienced at best. See this one if you feel inadequate because it's charming but realistic for the usual at home baker. (And don't worry, Cake Wrecks only features professional cakes, not ones made at home!) I love the idea of using a green M&M for the pea, so don't forget that fun detail!

And, of course, I had to do a quick search of Princess and the Pea cakes and found this wonderful one by SevenCakes.com which appeals not only for its quality but in that the princess actually appears to be having a sleepless night. So many illustrations and otherwise forget that the fairy tale is about not being able to sleep on the pea! And if you look closely at the bottom right hand corner, you'll see a pea pod with a pea missing. And a crown hanging on the bedpost. There's also more detailed photos of the cake on the main site. Love, love, love it! My favorite of all I've seen.

There's lots more cakes on the web, such as here and here and here (a black princess!), but for the sake of time and space, I'll refrain from sharing them all. Just remember that search engines are your friends if you want to see more and discover that many minutes have evaporated while looking at cakes.

By the way, the entry about the Nail Polish Giveaway has been the most popular so far for obvious reasons. The first bottle will be given away a week from today!

Fairy Tale Wrecks

Oh, the pressure! I have a growing list of items to share on the blog, but choosing the first one has been a true challenge. I ended up using the reliable eeny, meeny, miny, moe method and came up with a link to Cake Wrecks.

I know just about everyone has discovered Cake Wrecks already, but earlier this year the blog featured beautifully decorated Castles and Fairies cakes. I can’t pick a favorite but I’ve imagined one of these appeared at the imaginary SurLaLune anniversary party last winter. That’s the best way to have one of these cakes because I don’t think I would have the heart to actually cut into one and eat it.

Of course, Cake Wrecks actually specializes in cake decorating disasters. My favorite fairy tale-themed post so far is So What Happens If You EAT the Frog?, an entry devoted to the Princess and the Frog, i.e. The Frog Prince, cake wrecks.
