Scheherezade’s Bequest Issue 13

Scheherezade’s Bequest Issue 13 is now online for your reading convenience:

This issue of Scheherezade’s Bequest, with its companion updates from Cabinet des Fées, is being brought to you live from Deux-Sevrés, a place saturated in folklore and fairy tales. Situated in the Poitou-Charentes region of France, where the landscape alternates between agricultural patchworks and forested hills, Deux-Sevrés is home to the the 16th-century château d’Oiron (pictured below), where Charles Perrault based his story “Le Chat Botte” (Puss in Boots). Mêlusine, a European spirit of springs and rivers, created the city of Parthenay (located in the center of Deux-Sèvres) with a wave of her fairy wand. From the looks of this place, I’d say there are quite a lot of spirits still hard at work around here. The region also hosts the Angoulême Folklore Festival, where performers from all over the world gather to celebrate the traditions of their homelands amidst a bounty of wine and cheese.

It is with a celebratory spirit that we bring you this issue of Scheherezade’s Bequest — it is our 13th issue after all, and thirteen is a number of some import to fairy tales. In the Grimm’s version of Sleeping Beauty, it is the thirteenth fairy who curses the child Beauty after failing to receive an invitation to her christening. In another of the Grimm’s tales, The Twelve Brothers, it is the thirteenth child, the princess, who both seals her brothers’ fates and saves them from it. In the thirteenth issue of Scheherezade’s Bequest, trickster fairies come out in force. Mêlusine herself could be considered a trickster of sorts — you just know that when you tell someone not to do something, that’s the first thing they’re going to do. That’s trickery at its finest. The cover art we’ve chosen for this issue is called “Fighting Fairies II”, and we think it perfectly exemplifies the tricksy-ness of number 13, which contains 13 poems and stories we know will delight you.

Bryan Singer Talks Jack the Giant Killer

Here are some bits from Bryan Singer Talks Jack the Giant Killer. Click through to read the entire article.

The film stars Nicholas Hoult as the titular Jack, a farmhand who unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants and must do battle with the big fellas to save his kingdom.

Principal photography commenced last week, and this is what Singer had to say on the subject of giant killing, performance capture, and the many fairytale adaptations hitting screens in the next two years.

Why Make Jack the Giant Killer?

"I don't know - I grew up reading the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. I'm also familiar with the Jack the Giant Killer myth from the 1700s. There was a script that existed a couple of years ago that I changed quite a bit. The idea of that Wizard of Oz-style journey - you've got a beanstalk - what's up there?"

The Fairytale Renaissance

I was involved with this over two-and-a-half years ago, or even longer - I was flirting with it almost three years ago. But [these fairytale features] are all just a function of Alice in Wonderland. And that's cool - it's a rensaissance of those kind of movies, and it's cool - I'm happy to be a part of two renaissances; the comic book renaissance, and now this one. But it wasn't intentional. In fact, I probably would have been shy about jumping into a fairytale movie with all of the projects out there now - I might have actually backed away from it. But now it's just serendipitous I guess.

Hello June! Bluebeard, Mermaids, and Such

Bluebeard Tales From Around the World

It's June 1st and are you weary of Bluebeard? I know I inundated us all with my many posts about what I learned while working on Bluebeard Tales From Around the World. With 822 pages, I could spend another month on the topic quite easily, but I will spare all of us! I still have a few more posts about Bluebeard I will share over the next month, but the daily Bluebeard posts are at an end. I hope you enjoyed exploring the tale with me.

I have been busy, busy, busy working on future projects, one which is near release and may surprise and hopefully delight some of you. The next SurLaLune release, coming out this month, will be Mermaid and Other Water Spirit Tales From Around the World. It is big and it is filled with mermaid and water spirit lore, quite obviously. I will discuss it more in a week or so, but be on the lookout for it if you are interested in Mermaids.

I haven't chosen a theme for June and think I might not. There will be some mermaids discussion to go along with the book release.

Beastly Red Riding Hood

Also, with the upcoming DVD releases of Beastly and Red Riding Hood, we will have some fairy tale film discussions. I have preordered since I failed to see either in the theatre.

And those are the tentative plans for the month.

Bargain Kindle Books, Some Fairy Tale Titles

The Fairy Tale Detectives : The Sisters Grimm, Book One (Bk. 1) Grand Sophy Philippa Fisher's Fairy Godsister

I'm on my way back after taking a few days off for the holiday weekend. To start off, this is mostly off topic, but Amazon just created a Sunshine Deals list of bargain Kindle books ranging from $.99 to $2.99 with many interesting titles. There is a Georgette Heyer I already owned, The Grand Sophy, for $1.99. I haven't had a chance to look at all of the titles yet, but if I find any more fairy tale specific ones, I will share. There is every subject and genre represented but since this is SurLaLune, I will focus on the fantasy.

Here are some I found with a quick look:

The Fairy Tale Detectives : The Sisters Grimm, Book One (Bk. 1)

Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl, Book One)

Dreaming Anastasia

Dreaming Anastasia is $1.99 and that one does have some Baba Yaga in it.

Entice

Entice by Carrie Jones has pixies and Valhalla.

Philippa Fisher's Fairy Godsister

The Tail of Emily Windsnap

The Tail of Emily Windsnap is $1.99 and is obviously about mermaids.
